Wimbledon

The iconic tennis tournament of Wimbledon began on 27th June and you may be enjoying watching it when you get back from school or be lucky enough to have tickets. Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is played on real grass courts.

This year's tournament is back to having a full capacity crowd, although empty seats have been seen, and the tradition of requiring all players to wear all white outfits remains in place. Copious amounts of strawberries and cream will be consumed and lots of celebrities, including members of the Royal Family, wll be in attendance. The prize money stands at an incredible, record £40,350,000. The men's and women's champion will each receive £2,000,000!

However, there has been a controversial change to the rules this year relating to ranking points. You might have read that following the war in Ukraine, the All England Club announced that they would not allow Russian and Belarusian players to take part in Wimbledon this year. This means that players such as Medvedev cannot play. The ATP, ITF and WTA then announced that they would not award ranking points to competitors at Wimbledon this year as they considered the rule to be discriminatory. Ranking points help players to enter other tournaments and to increase their seeding against other players so to not allow these points is a huge blow to a number of competitors. However, Wimbledon is such an important tournament that the big names will still be in attendance including Djokovic and Nadal. Sadly Emma Radacanu and Andy Murray have been knocked out of the tournament as we go live with this edition but Katie Boulter is through to the next round and is Cameron Norrie. Federer cannot play due to a knee injury and planned surgery.
