Be Inspired - Sports to try this Autumn and Winter

As the new school term begins, we are very aware that not all of the sports on offer at your schools will appeal, no matter how many are on offer. However, we also strongly believe that there will be a sport out there for you.

So, we are starting our inspirational guide to sports to try.

1. Cycling.

There are so many areas to the sport of cycling that appeal to different people - Road, BMX, Mountain biking or just heading out on bikes with friends.

Head to www.britishcycling.org.uk and follow the links in Let's Ride or Get Involved for so many options for you, your family and friends.

Ever heard of a pedal party? Well they are being run in Nottingham, Manchester and Bicester to get children excited about riding a bike. The venues are traffic free and so if you have never ridden a bike before, it's a great place to start with instructors on hand.

If you already know how to ride then there will be cycle clubs on site to give you information on going to the next level. There's also bike hire at most venues.

2. Running

The best way to get inspired to run is to try Park Runs. These take place every Sunday across the country and are free to take part in.

Parkruns take place each Saturday and are 5 km in length.

Junior parkruns take place each Sunday and are for children up to the age of 14 and their families and are 2 km in length.

Follow this link and find a run near you. https://www.parkrun.org.uk

Another option is to follow the link to British Athletics and click on 'Get involved'. There are a number of options depending on what you would like to achieve: https://www.britishathletics.org.uk/get-involved/

3. Darts

Ever thought about playing darts? It's a fantastic game if you have good hand/eye coordination and can hold your nerve under pressure!

Head over to www.juniordarts.com for information on competitions and clubs and check out our previous articles on the Search by Sport page.

4. Snooker

Did you know that snooker is a fantastic sport to get involved with beyond simply playing at home or at school with your friends?

The WPBSA is the governing body for snooker and billiards and if you head to https://wpbsa.com/participation/ then you will be able to find out about clubs and coaches to improve your game. From there you can enter competitions and...who knows how far you will get!

Next week we will have some more sports for you to take a look at. Let us know how you get on if you are inspired to try them. Email us at contact@bsporty.co.uk
