Quidditch

Did you know that Quidditch is now a very popular sport that you could learn to play?! The game of Harry Potter is available to ‘muggles’ like us even though we can’t fly! At the end of this article, we have some great links to Harry Potter activities for you to enjoy too.

A Quidditch team usually consists of 7 players. In the game for your age group, no brooms are involved and it begins, as rugby does, as a non-contact sport and progresses to a contact game. In the adult game, which is so popular that there is even a World Cup, each player must be mounted on a broom when in play.

There are four types of positions in quidditch.

Chaser – These are the attacking team members. They have to try to throw the quaffle (game ball) through the opposition team’s hoops to score goals. Each goal is worth 10 points.

Keepers- These are the defense team players and have to guard the hoops to stop goals being scored. If they get the ball they can then turn into a chaser.

Beaters- These players are in charge of the bludgers. Like in the game of dodgeball they throw the bludgers at the opposition to ‘get them out’ and make them return to their hoops.

Seekers- Like in Harry Potter, the player who catches the Golden Snitch earns 30 points for their team and ends the game – making their team the winners.

Golden Snitch - This position is played by an independent official who enters the field of play during the game and tries to escape being caught by the seekers of both teams. To catch the snitch the seekers need to remove their yellow tag belt.

Participation

Over the past 2 years, over 300 schools and over 35,000 pupils have experienced playing this sport nationwide.

It appeals to everyone and the teams are mixed so boys and girls can play the game together. It’s non-stop, full of action and very competitive. Even if you don’t enjoy traditional sports you are bound to love quidditch.
