Handball is the most exciting, high scoring, action-packed team sport that can be played anywhere by anyone.

New Sport

Handball is a young sport in this country. It is catching on fast as more-and-more people try the sport for the first time and learn how to play the game together.

Fitness and Skills

Handball is fast-paced so great for fitness. It also helps improve skills such as throwing and jumping.

Social

Being a team sport means handball is social and a good way of meeting new friends.

No Hassle

Handball is traditionally played on a 40mx20m court. However, a great thing about handball is, like a football kickabout, you only need space and a ball to play. You could play with your family in the garden during lockdown, and with your friends when lockdown is lifted.

Main Rules of Handball

  • There are seven players on the pitch at a time, six outfield players and one goalkeeper.

  • A full-size handball court is 40m long and 20m wide. A handball court for junior players may be smaller.

  • There is a six-metre semi-circle at each end around the goal. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in this area.

  • Penalties are taken from a 7m mark.

  • There is a 9m freethrow line. If an attacking player is fouled within that line the game resumes from the 9m line.

  • Each match consists of two halves of 30 minutes (This time period is often less for younger players, depending on the age group).

  • A player can touch the ball with any part of their body above their knees.

  • A player with the ball can dribble it, pass or shoot, or take three steps without dribbling, passing or shooting.

  • A goalkeeper can come out of the area but must follow outfield player rules.
