Grand National

On Saturday 15th April, people all over the country, and the world, will stop to watch the most iconic horse race - the Grand National.

Taking place at Aintree racecourse in Liverpool, this race has been taking place almost every year since 1839 with over 500 million people watching it!

40 horses race over 4 miles (twice around the course) with 30 challenging fences, the most famous of which being the terrifying Becher's (pronounced Beecher’s) Brook and The Chair. The first ever Grand National race was won by a horse called Lottery and it is just as well known for never being a predictable event or winner as the outsiders often come through to beat the favourites!

Some horses have incredibly won more than once such as the famous Red Rum who won three times and came second twice! Tiger Roll won two years in a row in 2018 and 2019.

The Grand National is also one of the best paid horse races. The winner will receive over £500,000 this year.

You can watch the Grand National free on ITV - why not gather your family and friends together, pick a horse's name and cheer on your favourite.
