The Olympics takes place every 4 years - in the summer and the winter- and was first held in Ancient Greece 2,800 years ago!

New Sports at the Olympics

This year there are several new sports appearing at the Olympics.

Athletics

Athletics is the largest single sport at the Games. It is split into track, field, road and decathlon and heptathlon events.

basketball

Basketball first featured as an Olympic sport in Berlin 1936 for men. It began as a women's Olympic sport in 1976 in Montreal.

badminton

Badminton has only been an official Olympic sport since 1992 at the Barcelona Games. Unlike other net sports, badminton uses a shuttlecock instead of a ball.
